This two-CD set, released to coincide with the 2001 Classical Brit Awards, features some of the year's biggest-selling classical artists: Bond, Charlotte Church, Vanessa Mae, Andrea Bocelli and Russell Watson to name but five. There is plenty of room for much else besides and the extracts from a huge variety of Brits nominees' albums make for a varied and generally pleasant listen. Bryn Terfel's breathtaking version of "Myfanwy" is matched by Angela Gheorghiu singing "Pace, Pace Mio Dio!" from La forza del destino ; Kennedy's version of Bach's Violin Concerto in E; the marvellous Grimethorpe Colliery Band's "Nimrod"; Renée Fleming singing "Marie Theres" from Der Rosenkavalier ; Plácido Domingo with "Heil dir, Sonne! Heil dir, Licht!" from Siegfried and Simon Rattle's Mahler 10 with the Berlin Phil are highlights in this collection. Not quite sure why we've got the Three Tenors singing "Amazing Grace" (or should we say " Amyzing Gryce") or the Mediaeval Babes at all. There may be better collections around but this is an interesting record of current trends. -- Antonia Couling
